Gate face their midweek Terrors
|
Each time the Blues do not win a game, the next game gets even bigger. The weekend defeat to fellow strugglers Waltham Abbey was a cruel blow to Gate’s survival hopes, but with another 39 points up for grabs across the remainder of the season, the fight for survival will go on; and it starts again against Tooting and Mitcham United.
This is the first time the two sides have met this season; two previous attempts to play the game having been postponed.
With the weekend defeat fresh in the memory, manager Iain O’Connell will be looking for his side to concentrate in both boxes, pick up on the second balls and to use their experience to anticipate opportunities.
Once again Margate will be without the suspended Curtis Robinson and the injured Wayne Wilson (knee). John Keister remains an option in the centre of defence if the manager opts for a change in formation and Sam Cliff could offer an alternative going forward.
Gate’s current form has seen supporters searching for their history books. In any case, a run of 11 games without a win, five consecutive defeats and no goals in the last two games requires a quick and dramatic turn-around.
Tooting and Mitcham United come into this game on the back of a first win in five six games, but still in seventh place in the league table. Like another 10 sides – including Margate – the Terrors have a better away record than home. Beaten just three times away from their Imperial Fields base, Tooting will represent a tough nut for Gate to break.
For the visitors, Colin Hartburn returns from suspension.
Kick-off at Hartsdown Park is at 7.45pm on Tuesday.
